✧ statement of the Prophet ﷺ "Ali fights for the interpretation of the Qur'an as I fought for its revelation

أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ قُدَامَةَ وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ عَنْ جَرِيرٍ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ رَجَاءَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ قَالَ

كُنَّا جُلُوسًا نَنْتَظِرُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا قَدِ انْقَطَعَ شِسْعُ نَعْلِهِ فَرَمَى بِهَا إِلَى عَلِيٍّ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ مِنْكُمْ مَنْ يُقَاتِلُ عَلَى تَأْوِيلِ الْقُرْآنِ كَمَا قَاتَلْتُ عَلَى تَنْزِيلِهِ» فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَنَا؟ قَالَ «لَا» قَالَ عُمَرُ أَنَا قَالَ «لَا وَلَكِنْ صَاحِبَ النَّعْلِ»

✧ We were sitting waiting for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he came out to us with the strap of his sandal broken, and he threw it to Ali and said: "Among you is one who will fight for the interpretation of the Qur'an just as I fought for its revelation." Abu Bakr said: "Me?" He said: "No." Umar said: "Me?" He said: "No, but the one with the sandal."
