✧ what Ali was distinguished for in his ascent to the shoulders of the Prophet ﷺ

أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَسْبَاطٌ عَنْ نُعَيْمِ بْنِ حَكِيمٍ الْمَدَائِنِيِّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مَرْيَمَ قَالَ

قَالَ عَلِيٌّ «انْطَلَقْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى أَتَيْنَا الْكَعْبَةَ فَصَعِدَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى مَنْكِبَيَّ فَنَهَضَ بِهِ عَلِيٌّ» فَلَمَّا رَأَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ضَعْفَهُ قَالَ لَهُ «اجْلِسْ فَجَلَسَ فَنَزَلَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ» فَقَالَ «اصْعَدْ عَلَى مَنْكِبَيَّ» فَنَهَضَ بِهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ «إِنَّهُ لَيُخَيَّلُ إِلَيَّ أَنِّي لَوْ شِئْتُ لَنِلْتُ أُفُقَ السَّمَاءِ فَصَعِدَ عَلِيٌّ الْكَعْبَةِ وَعَلَيْهَا تِمْثَالٌ مِنْ صُفْرٍ أَوْ نُحَاسٍ فَجَعَلْتُ أُعَالِجُهُ لَأُزِيلَهُ يَمِينًا وَشِمَالًا وَقُدَّامًا وَمِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِ حَتَّى إِذَا اسْتَمْكَنْتُ مِنْهُ» قَالَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ «اقْذِفْهُ» فَقَذَفْتُ بِهِ فَكَسَرْتُهُ كَمَا تُكْسَرُ الْقَوَارِيرُ ثُمَّ نَزَلْتُ فَانْطَلَقْتُ أَنَا وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ نَسْتَبِقُ حَتَّى تَوَارَيْنَا بِالْبُيُوتِ خَشْيَةَ أَنْ يَلْقَانَا أَحَدٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ

✧ 'Ali said, 'I set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until we came to the Ka'bah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ climbed onto my shoulders, and 'Ali lifted him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw his weakness, he said to him, "Sit down." So he sat down and the Prophet of Allah ﷺ descended. Then he said, "Climb onto my shoulders." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lifted him. 'Ali said, "It seemed to me that if I wished I could reach the horizon of the sky." Then 'Ali climbed onto the Ka'bah, and on it was a statue of brass or copper. I began to work on it to remove it, right and left, front, from between his hands and from behind him, until I got a firm grip on it. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said, "Throw it down." So I threw it and broke it as glass vessels break. Then I descended, and I and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went off racing until we hid among the houses, fearing that someone from the people might meet us.'
