أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي لَيْلَى عَنِ الْحَكَمِ وَالْمِنْهَالِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى عَنْ أَبِيهِ

أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِعَلِيٍّ وَكَانَ يَسِيرُ مَعَهُ «إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ أَنْكَرُوا مِنْكَ أَنَّكَ تَخْرُجُ فِي الْبَرْدِ فِي الْمُلَاءَتَيْنِ وَتَخْرُجُ فِي الْحَرِّ فِي الْحَشْوِ وَالثَّوْبِ الْغَلِيظِ» قَالَ «أَوَلَمْ تَكُنْ مَعَنَا بِخَيْبَرَ؟» قَالَ بَلَى قَالَ «فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ وَعَقَدَ لَهُ لِوَاءً فَرَجَعَ وَبَعَثَ عُمَرَ وَعَقَدَ لَهُ لِوَاءً فَرَجَعَ بِالنَّاسِ» فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَأُعْطِيَنَّ الرَّايَةَ رَجُلًا يُحِبُّ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَيُحِبُّه اللهُ وَرَسَولُهُ لَيْسَ بِفَرَّارٍ» فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ وَأنا أَرْمَدُ قُلْتُ «إِنِّي أَرْمَدُ فَتَفَلَ فِي عَيْنِي» وَقَالَ «اللهُمَّ اكْفِهِ أَذَى الْحَرِّ وَالْبَرْدِ فَمَا وَجَدْتُ حَرًّا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ وَلَا بَرْدًا»

✧ He said to Ali while he was traveling with him: 'The people have criticized you for going out in the cold in two cloaks and going out in the heat in padded and heavy clothing.' He said: 'Were you not with us at Khaybar?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ sent Abu Bakr and tied a banner for him, and he returned. Then he sent Umar and tied a banner for him, and he returned with the people.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: «I will surely give the banner to a man who loves God and His Messenger, and whom God and His Messenger love, not one who flees.» He sent for me while I had sore eyes. I said: 'I have sore eyes.' He spat in my eye and said: «O God, spare him the harm of heat and cold.» I have felt neither heat nor cold since then.
