✧ I heard my father Buraydah say: We besieged Khaybar. Abu Bakr took the banner but no victory was granted to him. The next day Umar took it and withdrew, and no victory was granted to him. The people suffered hardship and exhaustion that day. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: «I will hand my banner tomorrow to a man who loves God and His Messenger, and whom God and His Messenger love. He will not return until victory is granted to him.» We spent the night with our hearts at ease that victory would come the next day. When the Messenger of God ﷺ prayed the dawn prayer, he stood up and called for the banner while the people were in their ranks. There was no one among us with any standing with the Messenger of God ﷺ except that he hoped to be the bearer of the banner. Then he called Ali b. Abi Talib, who had sore eyes. He spat in his eyes, wiped over them, and handed him the banner, and God granted victory to him. He said: 'And I was among those who craned their necks for it.'
