أَخْبَرَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ حِزَامٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ وَيَحْيَى بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ حَاطِبٍ عَنْ أُسَامَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ حَارِثَةَ قَالَ

خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ مُرْدِفِي إِلَى نُصُبٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَابِ فَذَبَحْنَا لَهُ شَاةً ثُمَّ صَنَعْنَاهَا لَهُ حَتَّى إِذَا نَضِجَتْ جَعَلْنَاهَا فِي سُفْرَتِنَا ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَسِيرُ وَهُوَ مُرْدِفِي فِي يَوْمٍ حَارٍّ مِنْ أَيَّامِ مَكَّةَ حَتَّى إِذَا كُنَّا بِأَعْلَى الْوَادِي لَقِيَهُ زَيْدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ نُفَيْلٍ فَحَيَّا أَحَدُهُمَا الْآخَرَ بِتَحِيَّةِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَا لِي أَرَى قَوْمَكَ قَدْ شَنِفُوا لَكَ» فَقَالَ أَمَّا وَاللهِ إِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَبِغَيْرِ نَائِرَةٍ كَانَتْ مِنِّي إِلَيْهِمْ وَلَكِنِّي أَرَاهُمْ عَلَى ضَلَالَةٍ فَخَرَجْتُ أَبْتَغِي هَذَا الدِّينَ حَتَّى قَدِمْتُ عَلَى أَحْبَارِ يَثْرِبَ فَوَجَدْتُهُمْ يَعْبُدُونَ اللهَ وَيُشْرِكُونَ بِهِ قُلْتُ «مَا هَذَا بِالدَّيْنِ الَّذِي أَبْتَغِي فَخَرَجْتُ حَتَّى أَقْدَمَ عَلَى أَحْبَارِ خَيْبَرَ فَوَجَدْتُهُمْ يَعْبُدُونَ اللهَ وَيُشْرِكُونَ بِهِ» فَقُلْتُ مَا هَذَا بِالدَّيْنِ الَّذِي أَبْتَغِي فَخَرَجْتُ حَتَّى قَدِمْتُ عَلَى أَحْبَارِ فَدَكٍ فَوَجَدْتُهُمْ يَعْبُدُونَ اللهَ وَيُشْرِكُونَ بِهِ فَقُلْتُ «مَا هَذَا بِالدَّيْنِ الَّذِي أَبْتَغِي خَرَجْتُ حَتَّى أَقْدَمَ عَلَى أَحْبَارِ أَيْلَةَ فَوَجَدْتُهُمْ يَعْبُدُونَ اللهَ وَيُشْرِكُونَ بِهِ» فَقُلْتُ مَا هَذَا بِالدَّيْنِ الَّذِي أَبْتَغِي فَقَالَ لِي حَبْرٌ مِنْ أَحْبَارِ الشَّامِ «أَتَسْأَلَ عَنْ دِينٍ مَا نَعْلَمُ أَحَدًا يَعْبَدُ اللهَ بِهِ إِلَّا شَيْخًا بِالْجَزِيرَةِ؟ فَخَرَجْتُ فَقَدِمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ بِالَّذِي خَرَجْتُ لَهُ» فَقَالَ إِنَّ كُلَّ مَنْ رَأَيْتَ فِي ضَلَالٍ إِنَّكَ تَسْأَلُ عَنْ دِينٍ هُوَ دِينُ اللهِ وَدِينُ مَلَائِكَتِهِ وَقَدْ خَرَجَ فِي أَرْضِكَ نَبِيٌّ أَوْ هُوَ خَارِجٌ يَدْعُو إِلَيْهِ ارْجِعْ فَصَدِّقْهُ وَاتَّبِعْهُ وَآمِنْ بِمَا جَاءَ بِهِ فَلَمْ أُحِسَّ نَبِيًّا بَعْدُ وَأَنَاخَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْبَعِيرَ الَّذِي تَحْتَهُ ثُمَّ قَدَّمْنَا إِلَيْهِ السُّفْرَةَ الَّتِي كَانَ فِيهَا الشِّوَاءُ فَقَالَ «مَا هَذَا؟» قُلْنَا هَذِهِ الشَّاةُ ذَبَحْنَاهَا لِنَصْبِ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَقَالَ إِنِّي لَا آكِلُ شَيْئًا ذُبِحَ لِغَيْرِ اللهِ ثُمَّ تَفَرَّقْنَا وَكَانَ صَنَمَانِ مِنْ نُحَاسٍ يُقَالُ لَهُمَا إِسَافُ وَنَائِلَةُ فَطَافَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَطُفْتُ مَعَهُ فَلَمَّا مَرَرْتُ مَسَحْتُ بِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَا تَمَسَّهُ» وَطُفْنَا فَقُلْتُ فِي نَفْسِي لَأَمَسَّنَّهُ أَنْظُرُ مَا يَقُولُ فَمَسَحْتُهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَا تَمَسَّهُ أَلَمْ تُنْهَ» قَالَ فَوَالَّذِي أَكْرَمَهُ وَأَنْزَلَ عَلَيْهِ الْكِتَابَ مَا اسْتَلَمَ صَنَمًا حَتَّى أَكْرَمَهُ بِالَّذِي أَكْرَمَهُ وَأَنْزَلَ عَلَيْهِ الْكِتَابَ قَالَ وَمَاتَ زَيْدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ نُفَيْلٍ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُبْعَثَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «يَأْتِي يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أُمَّةً وَحْدَهُ»

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out with me riding behind him on his mount to one of the stone idols. We slaughtered a sheep for it and then prepared it for him. When it was cooked, we put it in our provision bag. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proceeded riding with me behind him on a hot day of the days of Makkah, until when we were at the upper part of the valley, Zaid b. Amr b. Nufail met him. One of them greeted the other with the greeting of the Jahiliyyah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "Why do I see your people have turned against you?" He said: "By Allah, that is not because of any trouble from me to them, but I find them upon misguidance. So I went out seeking this religion until I came to the scholars of Yathrib. I found them worshipping Allah and associating partners with Him. I said: This is not the religion I seek. So I went out until I came to the scholars of Khaybar and found them worshipping Allah and associating partners with Him. I said: This is not the religion I seek. So I went out until I came to the scholars of Fadak and found them worshipping Allah and associating partners with Him. I said: This is not the religion I seek. I went out until I came to the scholars of Aylah and found them worshipping Allah and associating partners with Him. I said: This is not the religion I seek." Then a scholar from the scholars of Syria said to me: "Do you ask about a religion of which we know no one who worships Allah by it except an old man in the Jazirah?" So I went out and came to him and told him what I had gone out for. He said: "Everyone you have seen is astray. You ask about a religion which is the religion of Allah and the religion of His angels. A prophet has appeared in your land, or is about to appear, calling to it. Return, believe in him, and follow him, and have faith in what he brings." But I did not sense any prophet yet. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made the camel he was riding kneel down, then we brought the provision bag containing the roast to him. He said: "What is this?" We said: "This is the sheep we slaughtered for such-and-such an idol." He said: "I do not eat anything slaughtered for other than Allah." Then we parted. There were two idols of brass called Isaf and Na'ilah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ circumambulated and I circumambulated with him. When I passed by it, I touched it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Do not touch it." We circumambulated, and I said to myself: I will touch it to see what he says. I touched it, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Do not touch it; have you not been forbidden?" He said: By the One who honored him and sent down the Book to him, he never touched an idol until the One who honored him and sent down the Book to him honored him. He said: Zaid b. Amr b. Nufail died before the Prophet ﷺ was sent, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "He will come on the Day of Resurrection as a nation alone."
