أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ أَنَّ قُرَيْشًا أَهَمَّهُمْ

شَأْنُ الْمَخْزُومِيَّةِ الَّتِي سَرَقَتْ قَالُوا مَنْ يُكَلِّمُ فِيهَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالُوا وَمَنْ يَجْتَرِئُ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا أُسَامَةُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ حِبُّ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ فَكَلَّمَهُ أُسَامَةُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَتَشْفَعُ فِي حَدٍّ مِنْ حُدُودِ اللهِ؟» ثُمَّ قَامَ فَاخْتَطَبَ فَقَالَ «إِنَّمَا هَلَكَ الَّذِينَ قَبْلَكُمْ أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا إِذَا سَرَقَ فِيهِمُ الشَّرِيفُ تَرَكُوهُ وَإِذَا سَرَقَ فِيهِمُ الضَّعِيفُ أَقَامُوا عَلَيْهِ الْحَدَّ وَايْمُ اللهِ لَوْ أَنَّ فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتَ مُحَمَّدٍ سَرَقَتْ لَقَطَعْتُ يَدَهَا»

✧ The case of the Makhzumi woman who stole. They said, "Who will speak to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about her?" They said, "And who would dare to do so except Usama b. Zayd, the beloved of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" So Usama spoke to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do you intercede regarding one of the limits set by Allah?" Then he stood and delivered a sermon, saying, "Those before you were destroyed only because when a noble person among them stole, they left him alone, but when a weak person among them stole, they carried out the punishment on him. By Allah, if Fatima bt. Muhammad were to steal, I would cut off her hand."
