✧ I was among those who stoned him. When he felt the touch of the stones, he became extremely distressed. We mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, “Why did you not leave him?” Muhammad said: When I heard him say, “Why did you not leave him?” I mentioned that to ‘Asim b. ‘Umar b. Qatadah, and he said to me, “Husn b. Muhammad b. ‘Ali b. Abi Talib narrated to me that he narrated to me from the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, ‘Why did you not leave him?’ concerning Ma‘iz b. Malik, from whichever of the men of Aslam I wished, those whom I do not suspect, and I did not know the exact wording of the hadith. So I went to Jabir b. ‘Abdullah and said, ‘The men of Aslam narrate to me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them when they mentioned Ma‘iz’s distress at the stones when they hit him, “Why did you not leave him?” I do not suspect the people, but I do not know the hadith.’ He said, ‘O son of my brother, I am the most knowledgeable of people about this hadith. I was among those who stoned the man. When we took him out and stoned him, and he felt the touch of the stones, he cried out to us, “O people, return me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for my people have killed me and deceived me about myself, and they told me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not kill me.” We did not stop until we killed him. When we returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said, “Why did you not leave the man and bring him to me?” so that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ could verify his case. As for abandoning the prescribed punishment, no.’” Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman said: This chain is better than the one before it.
