أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ الرِّبَاطِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِي الْهَيْثَمِ بْنِ نَصْرِ بْنِ دَهْرٍ الْأَسْلَمِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

أَتَى مَاعِزُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ رَجُلٌ مِنَّا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ كَلِمَةً مَعْنَاهَا فَأَقَرَّ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ بِالزِّنَا فَأَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِرَجْمِهِ فَخَرَجْنَا بِهِ إِلَى حَرَّةِ بَنِي نيَارٍ فَرَجَمْنَاهُ فَلَمَّا وَجَدَ مَسَّ الْحِجَارَةِ جَزِعَ جَزَعًا شَدِيدًا فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا مِنْهُ وَرَجَعْنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ذَكَرْنَا لَهُ جَزَعَهُ قَالَ «فَهَلَّا تَرَكْتُمُوهُ»

✧ Ma‘iz b. Malik, a man from among us, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then he mentioned words meaning that he confessed adultery against himself. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered us to stone him. We took him out to the lava field of Banu Niyar and stoned him. When he felt the touch of the stones, he became extremely distressed. When we finished with him and returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we mentioned his distress to him. He said, “Why did you not leave him?”
