✧ Ma'iz b. Malik came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, purify me. He said: "Woe to you, go back and seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him." So he went back not far, then came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, purify me. He said: "Woe to you, go back and seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him." So he went back not far, then came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, purify me. The Prophet ﷺ said the same thing, until when it was the fourth time, the Prophet ﷺ said to him: "From what should I purify you?" He said: From adultery. The Prophet ﷺ asked him: "Is he insane?" He was informed that he was not insane. He asked: "Did you drink wine?" A man stood up and smelled his breath, but did not find the smell of wine on him. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Are you previously married?" He said: Yes. So he ordered him to be stoned, and he was stoned. The people were divided about him into two groups: some saying Ma'iz has perished by the worst of his deeds, his sin has enveloped him; and others saying: Is there any repentance better than the repentance of Ma'iz b. Malik, who came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and placed his hand in his hand and said: Kill me with stones. They remained like that for two or three days. Then the Prophet ﷺ came while they were sitting, greeted them, sat down, and said: "Seek forgiveness for Ma'iz b. Malik." They said: May Allah forgive Ma'iz b. Malik. The Prophet ﷺ said: "He has repented with a repentance that, if divided among a hundred, would suffice them." Abu Abd al-Rahman said to us: This has a sound chain of narration.
