أَخْبَرَنِي الْحَسَنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ الْمُجَالِدِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عُبَيْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ يُحَدِّثُ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ قَالَ حَجَّ عُمَرُ فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَخْطُبَ النَّاسَ خُطْبَةً فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ

أَنَّهُ قَدِ اجْتَمَعَ عِنْدَكَ رَعَاعُ النَّاسِ وَسِفْلَتُهُمْ فَأَخِّرْ ذَلِكَ حَتَّى تَأْتِيَ الْمَدِينَةَ قَالَ فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ دَنَوْتُ قَرِيبًا مِنَ الْمِنْبَرِ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ إِنِّي قَدْ عَرَفْتُ أَنَّ نَاسًا يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ خِلَافَةَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ كَانَتْ فَلْتَةً وَإِنَّ اللهَ وَقَى شَرَّهَا إِنَّهُ لَا خِلَافَةَ إِلَّا عَنْ مَشُورَةٍ فَلَا يُؤَمَّرُ وَاحِدٌ مِنْهُمَا تَغِرَّةَ أَنْ يُقْتَلَا وَأَنَّ نَاسًا يَقُولُونَ مَا بَالُ الرَّجْمِ وَإِنَّمَا فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ الْجَلْدُ؟ وَقَدْ رَجَمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَرَجَمْنَا بَعْدَهُ وَلَوْلَا أَنْ يَقُولُوا «أَثْبَتَ فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ مَا لَيْسَ فِيهِ لَأَثْبَتُّهَا كَمَا أُنْزِلَتْ» 7117 أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ الْأَذْرَمِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا غُنْدَرٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عُبَيْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ قَالَ حَجَّ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَخْطُبَ النَّاسَ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ إِنَّهُ قَدِ اجْتَمَعَ رِعَاعُ النَّاسِ فَأَخِّرْ ذَلِكَ نَحْوَهُ

✧ "Indeed the rabble and lowly people have gathered around you; so delay this until you come to Madinah." He said: When he arrived in Madinah, I drew near to the pulpit and heard him say: "I have come to know that some people say the caliphate of Abu Bakr was a sudden affair, and Allah warded off its evil. Indeed there is no caliphate except by consultation, so one of them is not to be appointed as commander, lest they be killed. And some people say: What about stoning, when in the Book of Allah there is only flogging? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stoned, and we stoned after him. Were it not that people would say: He has affirmed in the Book of Allah what is not in it, I would have affirmed it as it was revealed." 7117 Abdullah b. Muhammad b. Ishaq al-Adhrami informed me, saying: Ghundar narrated to us, saying: Shu'bah narrated to us from Sa'd b. Ibrahim, who said: I heard Ubayd Allah b. Abdullah b. Utbah narrating from Ibn Abbas from Abd al-Rahman b. Awf, who said: Umar b. al-Khattab performed Hajj and wanted to address the people, so Abd al-Rahman said: Indeed the rabble of people have gathered, so delay that, and similar to it.
