✧ Can someone be held accountable for someone else's crime?

أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنِ الْأَشْعَثِ بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ بَنِي يَرْبُوعٍ قَالَ

أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَهُوَ يَتَكَلَّمُ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَؤُلَاءِ بَنُو ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ يَرْبُوعَ الَّذِينَ أَصَابُوا فُلَانًا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «لَا يَعْنِي تَجْنِي نَفْسٌ عَلَى أُخْرَى»

Translation

Chain of narrators
  1. Qutaybah b. Saʿīd
  2. Abū ʿAwānah
  3. al-Ashʿath b. Sulaym from his father
  4. a man from Banī Yarbūʿ

✧ I came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was speaking. A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, these are the Banu Tha'labah b. Yarbu', those who attacked so-and-so." The Prophet ﷺ said: "No—meaning, no soul shall bear the sin of another."
