✧ Marriage of a man to his eldest daughter

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنْ صَالِحٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي سَالِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ يُحَدِّثُ

أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ حِينَ تَأَيَّمَتْ حَفْصَةُ بِنْتُ عُمَرَ مِنْ خُنَيْسِ بْنِ حُذَافَةَ السَّهْمِيِّ وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَتُوُفِّيَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ فَأَتَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ فَعَرَضْتُ عَلَيْهِ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتَ عُمَرَ قَالَ قُلْتُ إِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْكَحْتُكَ حَفْصَةَ قَالَ سَأَنْظُرُ فِي أَمْرِي فَلَبِثْتُ لَيَالِي ثُمَّ لَقِيَنِي فَقَالَ قَدْ بَدَا لِي أَنْ لَا أَتَزَوَّجَ يَوْمِي هَذَا قَالَ عُمَرُ فَلَقِيتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ إِنْ شِئْتَ زَوَّجْتُكَ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتَ عُمَرَ فَصَمَتَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَلَمْ يَرْجِعْ إِلَيَّ شَيْئًا فَكُنْتُ عَلَيْهِ أَوْجَدَ مِنِّي عَلَى عُثْمَانَ فَلَبِثْتُ لَيَالِيَ ثُمَّ خَطَبَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَنْكَحْتُهَا إِيَّاهُ فَلَقِيَنِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَقَالَ لَعَلَّكَ وَجَدْتَ عَلَيَّ حِينَ عَرَضْتَ عَلَيَّ حَفْصَةَ فَلَمْ أَرْجِعْ إِلَيْكَ شَيْئًا قَالَ عُمَرُ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَإِنَّهُ لَمْ يَمْنَعْنِي أَنْ أَرْجِعَ إِلَيْكَ فِيمَا عَرَضْتَ عَلَيَّ إِلَّا أَنِّي قَدْ كُنْتُ عَلِمْتُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ «قَدْ ذَكَرَهَا فَلَمْ أَكُنْ لِأُفْشِيَ سِرَّ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَلَوْ تَرَكَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَبِلْتُهَا»

✧ When Hafsah bt. ‘Umar became a widow from Khunays b. Hudhafah al-Sahmi, one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who died in Madinah, ‘Umar said: “I went to ‘Uthman b. ‘Affan and offered him Hafsah bt. ‘Umar.” He said: “I said, ‘If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsah.’ He replied, ‘I will consider my affair.’ I waited some nights, then he met me and said: ‘It has become clear to me that I should not marry at this time of mine.’” ‘Umar said: “Then I met Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and said to him: ‘If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsah bt. ‘Umar.’ Abu Bakr remained silent and did not return anything to me, and I was more upset with him than I had been with ‘Uthman. I waited some nights, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proposed to her and I married her to him. Then Abu Bakr met me and said: ‘Perhaps you were upset with me when you offered Hafsah to me and I did not return anything to you.’” ‘Umar said: “I said, ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Nothing prevented me from returning anything to you regarding what you offered except that I already knew that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had mentioned her, and I would not disclose the secret of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. If the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had left her, I would have accepted her.’”
