أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحِيمِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَسَدُ بْنُ مُوسَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَاتِمُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْجُعَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ السَّائِبَ بْنَ يَزِيدَ يَقُولُ «كُنَّا فِي زَمَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَبَعْضِ زَمَانِ عُمَرَ حَتَّى عَتَوْا فِيهَا يَعْنِي فِي الْخَمْرِ فَجَلَدَهُمْ أَرْبَعِينَ فَلَمْ يَنْكُلُوا فَجَلَدَ ثَمَانِينَ»

✧ I heard al-Sa'ib b. Yazid say: We were in the time of the Prophet ﷺ, Abu Bakr, and part of Umar's time, until they became defiant regarding it—meaning wine—so he flogged them forty lashes, but they did not stop, so he flogged eighty.
