أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُدْرِكٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَمَّادٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْأَوْدِيِّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي حُمَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْحِمْيَرِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أُهْبَانُ ابْنُ امْرَأَةِ أَبِي ذَرٍّ قَالَ
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا ذَرٍّ قُلْتُ أَيُّ الرِّقَابِ أَزْكَى؟ وَأَيُّ اللَّيْلِ خَيْرٌ؟ وَأَيُّ الْأَشْهُرِ أَفْضَلُ؟ فَقَالَ أَبُو ذَرٍّ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَمَا سَأَلَتْنِي وَأُخْبُرُكَ كَمَا أَخْبَرَنِي قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَيُّ الرِّقَابِ أَزْكَى؟ وَأَيُّ اللَّيْلِ خَيْرٌ؟ وَأَيُّ الْأَشْهُرِ أَفْضَلُ؟ فَقَالَ لِي «أَزْكَى الرِّقَابِ أَغْلَاهَا ثَمَنًا وَخَيْرُ اللَّيْلِ جَوْفُهُ وَأَفْضَلُ الْأَشْهُرِ شَهْرُ اللهِ الَّذِي تَدْعُونَهُ الْمُحَرَّمَ»

✧ I asked Abu Dharr: Which slaves are purest? Which part of the night is best? Which month is most excellent? Abu Dharr said: I asked the Messenger of God ﷺ just as you asked me, and I will inform you as he informed me. I said: O Messenger of God, which slaves are purest? Which part of the night is best? Which month is most excellent? He said to me: “The purest slaves are those highest in price, the best part of the night is its middle, and the most excellent month is God’s month, which you call al-Muḥarram.”
