أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ شَقِيقٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ حُذَيْفَةَ يَقُولُ كُنَّا عِنْدَ عُمَرَ فَقَالَ

أَيُّكُمْ يَحْفَظُ قَوْلَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي الْفِتْنَةِ قُلْتُ أَنَا أَحْفَظُ كَمَا قَالَهُ قَالَ إِنَّكَ عَلَيْهِ لَجَرِيءٌ فَهَاتِ فَقُلْتُ فِتْنَةُ الرَّجُلِ فِي أَهْلِهِ وَجَارِهِ وَمَالِهِ تُكَفِّرُهَا الصَّلَاةُ وَالصَّدَقَةُ وَالْأَمْرُ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَالنَّهْيِ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ قَالَ إِنِّي لَسْتُ عَنْ هَذَا أَسْأَلُكَ وَلَكِنْ أَسْأَلُكَ عَنِ الَّتِي تَمُوجُ كَمَوْجِ الْبَحْرِ فَقُلْتُ لَا تَخَفْ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فَإِنَّ بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَهَا بَابًا مُغْلَقًا

Translation

✧ “Which of you memorizes the statement of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the tribulation?” I said, “I memorize it as he said it.” He said, “You are bold about it, so bring it.” I said, “The tribulation of a man in his family, his neighbor, and his wealth—prayer, charity, commanding good, and forbidding evil expiate it.” He said, “I am not asking you about this, but I ask you about the one that surges like the waves of the sea.” I said, “Do not fear, O Commander of the Faithful, for between you and it there is a closed door.”
