أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ غَلَّابٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي الْحَكَمُ بْنُ الْأَعْرَجِ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ صِيَامِ عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَالَ

اعْدُدْ فَإِذَا أَصْبَحْتَ يَوْمَ التَّاسِعِ فَأَصْبِحْ صَائِمًا قُلْتُ «كَذَلِكَ كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ ﷺ يَصُومُ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ كَذَلِكَ كَانَ يَصُومُهُ

Translation

Chain of narrators
  1. ʿAmr b. ʿAlī
  2. Yaḥyá
  3. Muʿāwiyah b. ʿAmr b. Ghallāb
  4. al-Ḥakam b. al-Aʿraj

✧ Count, and when you wake on the ninth day, begin the day fasting. I said: “Was this how Muḥammad ﷺ used to fast?” He said: “Yes, this is how he used to fast it.”
