Recommendation to fast the day of ʿAshūrāʾ

أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَوْهَبٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ عَنْ عُقَيْلٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنِ ابْنِ سَنْدَرٍ عَنْ رِجَالٍ مِنْهُمْ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لِرَجُلٍ مِنْ أَسْلَمَ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا أَصْبَحَ مِنْ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ «اذْهَبْ إِلَى قَوْمِكَ فَمُرْهُمْ فَلْيَصُومُوا هَذَا الْيَوْمَ» قَالَ الْأَسْلَمِيُّ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ وَجَدْتُ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ تَغَدَّى؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «فَلْيُتِمَّ صِيَامَهُ»

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to a man from Aslam after the morning of the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ had already come: “Go to your people and command them to fast this day.” The Aslamī said: “O Messenger of Allah, what do you think if I find one of them having already eaten the morning meal?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Let him complete his fast.”
