Recommendation to fast the day of ʿAshūrāʾ

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنْ صَالِحٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ أَنَّ حُمَيْدَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ
أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ يَخْطُبُ النَّاسَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ يَقُولُ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ؟ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ هَذَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ وَلَمْ يَكْتُبِ اللهُ عَلَيْكُمْ صِيَامَهُ» وَإِنِّي صَائِمٌ مُعَاوِيَةُ يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَصُومَ فَلْيَصُمْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُفْطِرَ فَلْيُفْطِرْ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ وَهَذَا هُوَ الصَّوَابُ

✧ He informed him that he heard Muʿāwiyah addressing the people in Madinah, saying: “O people of Madinah, where are your scholars? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘This is the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ, and Allah has not prescribed its fasting upon you,’ and I am fasting.” Muʿāwiyah said that, then: “So whoever wishes to fast, let him fast, and whoever wishes to break his fast, let him break it.” Abu ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: This is the correct version.
