Recommendation to fast the day of ʿAshūrāʾ

أَخْبَرَنِي أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي قَالَ سَمِعْتُ النُّعْمَانَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنِ السَّائِبِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ يَخْطُبُ عَلَى مِنْبَرِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «هَذَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ وَلَمْ يُفْرَضْ عَلَيْكُمْ صِيَامُهُ وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَصُومَ فَلْيَصُمْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُفْطِرَ فَلْيُفْطِرْ» قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ وَهَذَا أَيْضًا خَطَأٌ وَالنُّعْمَانُ بْنُ رَاشِدٍ ضَعِيفٌ كَثِيرُ الْخَطَأِ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ وَنَظِيرُهُ فِي الزُّهْرِيِّ زَمْعَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ

✧ He heard Muʿāwiyah delivering a sermon from the pulpit of the Prophet ﷺ, saying: “O people of Madinah, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘This is the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ. Its fasting has not been made obligatory upon you, but I am fasting. So whoever wishes to fast, let him fast, and whoever wishes to break his fast, let him break it.’” Abu ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: This is also erroneous. Al-Nuʿmān b. Rāshid is weak and makes many mistakes from al-Zuhrī, and his counterpart in transmitting from al-Zuhrī is Zamʿah b. Ṣāliḥ.
