al-Sunan al-Kubra (al-Nasa'i) 2852

✧ The beginning of fasting on the day of Ashura, and the mention of the variation of the narrators' words in it.

أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا شُعَيْبٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عُرْوَةُ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «يَأْمُرُ بِصِيَامِ عَاشُورَاءَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُفْرَضَ رَمَضَانُ فَلَمَّا فُرِضَ رَمَضَانُ كَانَ مَنْ شَاءَ صَامَ عَاشُورَاءَ وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَفْطَرَ»

Translation

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to command fasting on Ashura before Ramadan was made obligatory. When Ramadan was made obligatory, whoever wished fasted Ashura, and whoever wished broke his fast.
