✧ I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "The dead person is punished because of his family's weeping over him." Ibn Abbas said: Umar used to say some of that. I went out with Umar until when we were at al-Bayda, he saw riders under a tree and said, "Look who the riders are." I went and found Suhayb and his family. I returned to him and said, "O Commander of the Believers, this is Suhayb and his family." He said, "Bring Suhayb to me." When we entered Madinah, Umar was struck. Suhayb sat weeping beside him, saying, "O my brother, O my brother." Umar said, "O Suhayb, do not weep over me, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'The dead person is punished because of some of his family's weeping over him.'" He said: I mentioned that to Aisha, and she said, "By Allah, you are not narrating this hadith to me from liars or deniers, but the hearing errs. And you have in the Quran what suffices you: 'No bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another' [An-Najm 38]. But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Allah increases the disbeliever in punishment because of his family's weeping over him.'"
