أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنْ صَالِحٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ خَبَّابِ بْنِ الْأَرَتِّ أَنَّ خَبَّابًا قَالَ
رَمَقْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فِي صَلَاةٍ صَلَّاهَا حَتَّى كَانَ مَعَ الْفَجْرِ فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ جَاءَهُ خَبَّابٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي لَقَدْ صَلَّيْتَ اللَّيْلَةَ صَلَاةً قَالَ أَجَلْ إِنَّهَا صَلَاةُ رَغَبٍ وَرَهَبٍ سَأَلْتُ رَبِّي فِيهَا ثَلَاثَ خِصَالٍ فَأَعْطَانِي اثْنَتَيْنِ وَمَنَعَنِي وَاحِدَةً سَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يُهْلِكَنَا بِمَا أَهْلَكَ بِهِ الْأُمَمَ قَبْلَنَا فَأَعْطَانِيهَا وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يُظْهِرَ عَلَيْنَا عَدُوًّا مِنْ غَيْرِنَا فَأَعْطَانِيهَا وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يَلْبِسَنَا شِيَعًا فَمَنَعَنِيهَا

✧ I watched Allah's Messenger ﷺ in a prayer that he prayed until dawn. When Allah's Messenger ﷺ finished his prayer, Khabbab came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, tonight you prayed a prayer—" He said: "Indeed, it is a prayer of hope and fear. I asked my Lord during it for three qualities: He granted me two and withheld one. I asked Him not to destroy us as He destroyed the nations before us, and He granted me that. I asked Him not to let an enemy from outside us prevail over us, and He granted me that. I asked Him not to divide us into factions, but He withheld that."
