أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ عَنْ يُونُسَ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي حُمَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ
أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ قُلْتُ وَأَنَا فِي سَفَرٍ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَاللهِ لَأَرْقُبَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ لِصَلَاةٍ؛ حَتَّى أَرَى فِعْلَهُ فَلَمَّا صَلَّى صَلَاةَ الْعِشَاءِ وَهِيَ الْعَتَمَةُ اضْطَجَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هَوِيًّا مِنَ اللَّيْلِ ثُمَّ اسْتَيْقَظَ فَنَظَرَ إِلَى الْأُفُقِ فَقَالَ {رَبَّنَا مَا خَلَقْتَ هَذَا بَاطِلًا} [آل عمران 191] حَتَّى بَلَغَ {إِنَّكَ لَا تُخْلِفُ الْمِيعَادَ} [آل عمران 194] ثُمَّ أَهْوَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِيَدِهِ إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ فَاسْتَلَّ مِنْهُ سِوَاكًا ثُمَّ أَفْرَغَ فِي قَدَحٍ مِنْ إِدَاوَةٍ عِنْدَهُ مَاءًا فَاسْتَنَّ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَلَّى حَتَّى قُلْتُ قَدْ صَلَّى قَدْرَ مَا نَامَ ثُمَّ اضْطَجَعَ حَتَّى قُلْتُ قَدْ نَامَ قَدْرَ مَا صَلَّى ثُمَّ اسْتَيْقَظَ فَفَعَلَ كَمَا فَعَلَ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ وَقَالَ مِثْلَ مَا قَالَ فَفَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ قَبْلَ الْفَجْرِ

✧ A man among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ said: I said while I was traveling with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, “By Allah, I will observe the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in prayer until I see what he does.” When he prayed the 'Isha' prayer, which is the 'Atamah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lay down for a portion of the night, then he woke up and looked at the horizon and said, “Our Lord, You have not created this in vain” [Al 'Imran 191] until he reached “Indeed, You do not break the promise” [Al 'Imran 194]. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached with his hand to his bed, drew out a toothstick from it, then poured water from a water skin he had into a cup, cleaned his teeth, then stood and prayed until I said, “He has prayed as long as he slept.” Then he lay down until I said, “He has slept as long as he prayed.” Then he woke up and did as he did the first time and said the like of what he said. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did that three times before dawn.
