✧ There were kings after ʿĪsā who altered the Torah and the Gospel. Among them were believers who recited the Torah and the Gospel. It was said to their kings: “We find no insult more severe than the insult with which these people insult us. They recite {And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed, those are the disbelievers} [al-Māʾidah: 44] and these verses, along with the faults they find in our deeds in their recitation. So summon them and let them recite as we recite and believe as we believe.” So he summoned them and gathered them, and offered them either death or to abandon reciting the Torah and the Gospel except what they had altered of it. They said: “What do you want? That is why you called us.” Then a group of them said: “Build us a column, then raise us up to it, then give us something with which we can raise our food and drink, so that we will not return to you.” Another group said: “Leave us to roam the earth and wander and drink as wild animals drink. If you can overpower us in your land, then kill us.” Another group said: “Build us houses in the deserts and we will dig wells and cultivate herbs, and we will not return to you or pass by you.” There was none of the tribes but had a close relative among them. So they did that. Then Allah ﷻ revealed: {And monasticism which they invented, We did not prescribe it upon them, except seeking the pleasure of Allah, but they did not observe it with its due observance} [al-Ḥadīd: 27]. And the later ones said: “We will worship as so-and-so worshipped, and roam as so-and-so roamed, and take houses as so-and-so took,” while they remained upon their polytheism, having no knowledge of the faith of those whom they imitated. Then when the Prophet ﷺ was sent, and none of them remained except a few, a man came down from his hermitage, a wanderer came from his wandering, and the monk came from his monastery, and they believed in him and attested him. So Allah ﷻ said: {O you who believe, fear Allah and believe in His Messenger, He will give you two portions of His mercy} [al-Ḥadīd: 28]: two rewards for their belief in ʿĪsā son of Maryam and their attestation of the Torah and the Gospel, and for their belief in Muḥammad ﷺ and their attestation of him. He said: {and He will make for you a light by which you walk} [al-Ḥadīd: 28]: the Qur’an and their following of the Prophet ﷺ. He said: {so that the People of the Book may know} [al-Ḥadīd: 29]—those who resemble you—{that they have no power over anything of Allah’s bounty, and that bounty is in Allah’s hand; He gives it to whom He wills. And Allah is the Possessor of great bounty} [al-Ḥadīd: 29].
