أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَمَّارٍ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ حُرَيْثٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ
كُنَّا نُسَلِّمُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَيَرُدُّ عَلَيْنَا السَّلَامَ حَتَّى قَدِمْنَا مِنْ أَرْضِ الْحَبَشَةِ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يُرِدَّ عَلَيَّ فَأَخَذَنِي مَا قَرُبَ وَمَا بَعُدَ فَجَلَسْتُ حَتَّى إِذَا قَضَى الصَّلَاةُ قَالَ «إِنَّ اللهَ يُحْدِثُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ مَا يَشَاءُ وَإِنَّهُ قَدْ أَحْدَثَ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ أَلَا يُتَكَلَّمَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ»

✧ We used to greet the Prophet ﷺ and he would return the greeting to us until we came from the land of Abyssinia. I greeted him and he did not return the greeting to me, so I was overtaken by what was near and what was far. I sat until when he finished the prayer, he said: “Indeed Allah brings about in His command what He wills, and He has brought about in His command that one should not speak during the prayer.”
