أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أُمَيَّةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ قَالَ لَمَّا بَايَعَ مُعَاوِيَةُ لِابْنِهِ قَالَ مَرْوَانُ سُنَّةُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ سُنَّةُ هِرَقْلَ وَقَيْصَرَ فَقَالَ مَرْوَانُ هَذَا الَّذِي أَنْزَلَ اللهُ فِيهِ {وَالَّذِي قَالَ

لِوَالِدَيْهِ أُفٍّ لَكُمَا} [الأحقاف 17] الْآيَةَ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ عَائِشَةَ فَقَالَتْ «كَذَبَ وَاللهِ مَا هُوَ بِهِ وَإِنْ شِئْتُ أَنْ أُسَمِّيَ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ فِيهِ لَسَمَّيْتُهُ وَلَكِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ لَعَنَ أَبَا مَرْوَانَ وَمَرْوَانُ فِي صُلْبِهِ فَمَرْوَانُ فضَضٌ مِنْ لَعْنَةِ اللهِ»

✧ “To his parents: Uff to you” [al-Aḥqāf 17], the verse. That reached ʿĀʾishah, and she said: He lied, by Allah, he is not the one. If I wished to name the one about whom it was revealed, I would name him. But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed Abū Marwān while Marwān was in his loins, so Marwān is a fragment of Allah's curse.
