أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْمُفَضَّلِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ يَعْلَى بْنِ عَطَاءٍ عَنْ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ الثَّقَفِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مُرْنِي بِأَمْرٍ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ لَا أَسْأَلُ عَنْهُ أَحَدًا غَيْرَكَ بَعْدَكَ قَالَ قُلْ آمَنْتُ بِاللهِ ثُمَّ اسْتَقِمْ قَالَ فَمَا أَتَّقِي؟ فَأَشَارَ إِلَى لِسَانِهِ 11426 أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ يَعْلَى بْنِ عَطَاءٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سُفْيَانَ الثَّقَفِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ مِثْلَهُ

Translation

✧ I said: O Messenger of Allah, command me with a matter in Islam that I will not ask anyone about after you. He said: Say: I believe in Allah, then remain steadfast. He said: What should I guard against? He pointed to his tongue. 11426 Muhammad b. Bashshar narrated to us; he said: Muhammad narrated to us; he said: Shuʿbah narrated to us from Yaʿlā b. ʿAṭāʾ from ʿAbd Allah b. Sufyān al-Thaqafī from his father, something similar.
