أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ قَالَ

عَبْدُ اللهِ إِنَّ قُرَيْشًا لَمَّا اسْتَعْصَتْ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ دَعَا عَلَيْهِمْ بِسِنِينَ كَسِنِي يُوسُفَ فَأَصَابَهُمْ قَحْطٌ وَجَهْدٌ حَتَّى أَكَلُوا الْعِظَامَ وَجَعَلَ يَعْنِي الرَّجُلَ يَنْظُرُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ فَيَرَى بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهَا كَهَيْئَةِ الدُّخَانِ مِنَ الْجَهْدِ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {يَوْمَ تَأْتِي السَّمَاءُ بِدُخَانٍ مُبِينٍ يَغْشَى النَّاسَ هَذَا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ} [الدخان 11] فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ فَقِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ اسْتَسْقِ اللهَ لَهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ قَدْ هَلَكُوا فَاسْتَسْقَى اللهَ فَسُقُوا فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ تَعَالَى {إِنَّا كَاشِفُو الْعَذَابِ قَلِيلًا إِنَّكُمْ عَائِدُونَ} [الدخان 15] فَعَادُوا إِلَى حَالَتِهِمُ الَّتِي كَانُوا عَلَيْهَا حِينَ أَصَابَتْهُمُ الرَّفَاهِيَةُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ تَعَالَى {يَوْمَ نَبْطِشُ الْبَطْشَةَ الْكُبْرَى إِنَّا مُنْتَقِمُونَ} [الدخان 16] قَالَ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ

✧ ʿAbdullāh said: When Quraysh stubbornly resisted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he supplicated against them with years like the years of Yūsuf. Then famine and hardship struck them until they ate bones. A man would look at the sky and see between him and it something like smoke from the hardship. Then Allah, exalted is He, sent down: {The day when the sky will bring a visible smoke, covering the people; this is a painful punishment} [al-Dukhān 11]. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was approached and it was said: “O Messenger of Allah, ask Allah for rain for them, for they are perishing.” So he asked Allah for rain, and they were given rain. Then Allah, exalted is He, sent down: {Indeed, We will remove the punishment a little; indeed, you will return} [al-Dukhān 15]. Then they returned to the state they were in when prosperity came to them. So Allah, exalted is He, sent down: {The day We seize with the greatest seizure; indeed, We will take retribution} [al-Dukhān 16]. He said: “The day of Badr.”
