أَخْبَرَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عُمَارَةَ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ

مَرِضَ أَبُو طَالِبٍ فَأَتَتْهُ قُرَيْشٌ وَأَتَاهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَعُودُهُ وَعِنْدَ رَأْسِهِ مَقْعَدُ رَجُلٍ فَجَاءَ أَبُو جَهْلٍ فَقَعَدَ فِيهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلَا تَرَى إِلَى ابْنِ أَخِيكَ يَقَعُ فِي آلِهَتِنَا؟ قَالَ ابْنَ أَخِي مَا لِقَوْمِكَ يَشْكُونَكَ؟ قَالَ «أُرِيدُهُمْ عَلَى كَلِمَةٍ تَدِينُ لَهُمْ بِهَا الْعَرَبُ وَتُؤَدِّي إِلَيْهِمُ الْعَجَمُ الْجِزْيَةَ» قَالَ وَمَا هِيَ؟ قَالَ «لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ» فَقَالُوا أَجَعَلَ الْآلِهَةَ إِلَهًا وَاحِدًا؟ فَنَزَلَتْ ص فَقَرَأَ حَتَّى بَلَغَ {عُجَابٌ} [ص 5] [234] 11373 أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَبِيبٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ وَهُوَ ابْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبَّادٌ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ نَحْوَهُ

✧ Abu Talib fell ill, and Quraysh came to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit him. At his head there was a seat for a man, and Abu Jahl came and sat in it. Then he said, “Do you not see your nephew insulting our gods?” He said, “O son of my brother, what is it that your people complain about you?” He said, “I want them to accept one word by which the Arabs will submit to them and the non-Arabs will pay them the jizyah.” He said, “And what is it?” He said, “There is no god but Allah.” They said, “Has he made the gods one god?” Then Surah Sad was revealed, and he recited until he reached {a wonder} [Sad 5].
