أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْهَيْثَمِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ قال حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ وَسُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ الْبُنَانِيِّ عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ

غَابَ عَمِّي أَنَسُ بْنُ النَّضْرِ الَّذِي سُمِّيتُ بِهِ وَلَمْ يَشْهَدْ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بَدْرًا فَقَالَ أَوَّلُ مَشْهَدٍ شَهِدَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ غِبْتُ عَنْهُ أَمَا وَاللهِ لَئِنْ أَشْهَدَنِي اللهُ مَشْهَدًا بَعْدَهُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لَيَرَيَنَّ مَا أَصْنَعُ فَهَابَ أَنْ يَقُولَ غَيْرَهَا فَلَمَّا كَانَ مِنَ الْعَامِ الْمُقْبِلِ شَهِدَ أُحُدًا قَالَ فَلَقِيَهُ سَعْدُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ فَقَالَ مَهْيَمْ فَقَالَ لَهُ يَا أَبَا عَمْرٍو إِنِّي أَجِدُ رِيحَ الْجَنَّةِ دُونَ أُحُدٍ فَقَاتَلَ حَتَّى قُتِلَ فَوُجِدَ بِهِ بِضْعَةٌ وَثَمَانُونَ مِنْ رَمْيَةٍ وَطَعْنَةٍ وَضَرْبَةٍ قَالَتْ أُخْتُهُ فَمَا عَرَفْتُ أَخِي إِلَّا بِبَنَانِهِ وَكَانَ حَسَنَ الْبَنَانِ فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ رِجَالٌ صَدَقُوا مَا عَاهَدُوا اللهَ عَلَيْهِ} [الأحزاب 23] إِلَى قَوْلِهِ {تَبْدِيلًا} [الأحزاب 23] فَكُنَّا نَرَى أَنَّهَا نَزَلَتْ فِيهِ وَفِي أَصْحَابِهِ

✧ My uncle Anas b. al-Nadr, after whom I was named, was absent and did not witness Badr with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: “The first battle the Messenger of Allah ﷺ witnessed, I missed it. By Allah, if Allah lets me witness another battle with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, He will see what I do.” He was too shy to say anything else. The following year, he witnessed Uhud. Sa'd b. Mu'adh met him and said: “What is the matter?” He said: “O Abu 'Amr, I find the scent of Paradise before Uhud.” He fought until he was killed. More than eighty wounds were found on him from arrows, stabs, and strikes. His sister said: “I recognized my brother only by his fingertips; he had beautiful fingertips.” Then this verse was revealed: {Among the believers are men who have been true to what they pledged to Allah} [al-Ahzab 23] up to His saying {any alteration} [al-Ahzab 23]. We used to think it was revealed about him and his companions.
