أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُقَيْلٍ أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبِي أَنْبَأَنِي يَزِيدُ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ

جَاءَ أَبُو سُفْيَانَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ أَنْشُدُكَ اللهَ وَالرَّحِمَ فَقَدْ أَكَلْنَا الْعِلْهِزَ يَعْنِي الْوَبَرَ وَالدَّمَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {وَلَقَدْ أَخَذْنَاهُمْ بِالْعَذَابِ فَمَا اسْتَكَانُوا لِرَبِّهِمْ وَمَا يَتَضَرَّعُونَ} [المؤمنون 76]

Translation

✧ Abu Sufyan came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Muhammad, I adjure you by Allah and kinship, for we have eaten the 'ilhiz, meaning wool and blood. Then Allah, Exalted is He, revealed: “And We had seized them with punishment, but they did not humble themselves to their Lord, nor did they supplicate” [al-Muʾminūn 76].
