أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ سَعِيدَ بْنَ جُبَيْرٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ

إِنَّمَا كُرِهَ السَّمَرُ حِينَ نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {مُسْتَكْبِرِينَ بِهِ سَامِرًا تَهْجُرُونَ} [المؤمنون 67] فَقَالَ مُسْتَكْبِرِينَ بِالْبَيْتِ يَقُولُونَ نَحْنُ أَهْلُهُ {سَامِرًا} [المؤمنون 67] قَالَ كَانُوا يَتَكَبَّرُونَ وَيَسْمُرُونَ فِيهِ وَلَا يَعْمُرُونَهُ وَيَهْجُرُونَهُ

✧ Nighttime conversation was only disliked when this verse was revealed: “In arrogance regarding it, conversing by night, speaking nonsense” [al-Muʾminūn 67]. He said: showing arrogance about the House, saying: We are its people; “conversing by night” [al-Muʾminūn 67]. He said: They used to act arrogantly and converse at night in it, and they would not maintain it, and they would abandon it.
