أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا بْنِ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ عَنْ دَاوُدَ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ قَالَتْ

قُرَيْشٌ لِلْيَهُودِ أَعْطُونَا شَيْئًا نَسْأَلُ بِهِ هَذَا الرَّجُلَ فَقَالُوا سَلُوهُ عَنِ الرُّوحِ فَسَأَلُوهُ فَنَزَلَتْ {يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الرُّوحِ قُلِ الرُّوحُ مِنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّي وَمَا أُوتِيتُمْ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا} [الإسراء 85] قَالُوا أُوتِينَا عِلْمًا كَثِيرًا أُوتِينَا التَّوْرَاةَ وَمَنْ أُوتِيَ التَّوْرَاةَ فَقَدْ أُوتِيَ خَيْرًا كَثِيرًا فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ {قُلْ لَوْ كَانَ الْبَحْرُ مِدَادًا لِكَلِمَاتِ رَبِّي لَنَفِدَ الْبَحْرُ} [الكهف 109]

✧ The Quraysh said to the Jews: 'Give us something by which we can question this man.' They said: 'Ask him about the Spirit.' So they asked him, and it was revealed: {And they ask you about the Spirit. Say: The Spirit is of the command of my Lord, and you have not been given of knowledge except a little} [al-Isra' 85]. They said: 'We have been given abundant knowledge; we have been given the Torah, and whoever has been given the Torah has been given abundant good.' So Allah revealed: {Say: If the sea were ink for the words of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted} [al-Kahf 109].
