✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ conquered Makkah, he appointed al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām over one of the two flanks and Khālid b. al-Walīd over the other. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ saw me among a throng and called out to me. I said, “At your service, O Messenger of God.” He said, “Call the Anṣār for me.” So I called them and they gathered around the Messenger of God ﷺ as if they had an appointment. He said, “O company of the Anṣār, Quraysh have gathered against us. When you meet them, mow them down completely until you join me at al-Ṣafā—al-Ṣafā is your meeting place.” Abū Hurayrah said: We did not meet anyone among them but we did such-and-such to him. Then Abū Sufyān came and said, “O Messenger of God, you have made permissible the green (youth) of Quraysh. No Quraysh after today.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “Whoever closes his door is safe, whoever enters Abū Sufyān’s house is safe, and whoever throws down his weapon is safe.” The stalwarts and nobles of Quraysh sought refuge at the Kaʿbah—that is, they entered it. He said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ came and circumambulated the House. He began passing by those idols and jabbing them with the tip of his bow, saying, {Truth has come and falsehood has vanished. Indeed falsehood is ever vanishing} [al-Isrāʾ: 81], until when he finished and prayed, he came and grasped the two doorposts, then said, “O company of Quraysh, what do you say?” They said, “We say: a nephew and a cousin, merciful and noble.” Then he repeated the words to them, and they said the like. He said, “Indeed I say as my brother Yūsuf said: {No blame upon you today. God forgives you, and He is the Most Merciful of the merciful} [Yūsuf: 92].” So they went out and pledged allegiance to him upon Islam. Then he came to al-Ṣafā for the appointment with the Anṣār. He stood on al-Ṣafā in a place from which he could see the House, praised and extolled God, and mentioned His support for him. The Anṣār said, while they were below him, “As for the man, compassion for his relatives and desire for his kinsfolk have overtaken him.” Then revelation came to him about that. Abū Hurayrah said: When revelation came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, none of us was able to raise his gaze toward him until the revelation passed from him. When the revelation ended, he said, “Well now, O company of the Anṣār! You said: ‘As for the man, compassion for his relatives and desire for his kinsfolk have overtaken him.’ By God, I am indeed the Messenger of God. I emigrated to God, then to you. Life is your life and death is your death.” Abū Hurayrah said: I saw the elders weeping until tears wetted their beards. Then they said, “An excuse to God and His Messenger. By God, we said nothing but out of concern for God and His Messenger.” He said, “Indeed God and His Messenger have believed you and accepted your words.”
