أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ عَنِ الزُّبَيْرِ بْنِ الْعَوَّامِ قَالَ
لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {وَاتَّقُوا فِتْنَةً لَا تُصِيبَنَّ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا مِنْكُمْ خَاصَّةً} [الأنفال 25] الْآيَةَ قَالَ وَنَحْنُ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُتَوَافِرُونَ قَالَ فَجَعَلْتُ أَتَعْجَبُ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ أَيُّ فِتْنَةٍ تُصِيبُنَا مَا هَذِهِ الْفِتْنَةُ؟ حَتَّى رَأَيْنَاهَا
Translation

✧ When this verse was sent down: {And beware of a trial which will not strike only those among you who have done wrong} [Al-Anfal: 25] to the end of the verse, he said, "We were then numerous." He said, "I began to wonder about this verse: what trial will strike us? What is this trial? Until we saw it."
