أَخْبَرَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ سَعْدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَمِّي حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنْ صَالِحٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ صُعَيْرٍ قَالَ كَانَ §الْمُسْتَفْتِحَ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ أَبُو جَهْلٍ وَإِنَّهُ قَالَ

حِينَ الْتَقَى الْقَوْمُ اللهُمَّ أَيُّنَا كَانَ أَقْطَعَ لِلرَّحِمِ وَآتَى لِمَا لَا نَعْرِفُ فَافْتَحِ الْغَدَ وَكَانَ ذَلِكَ اسْتِفْتَاحَهُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ {إِنْ تَسْتَفْتِحُوا فَقَدْ جَاءَكُمُ الْفَتْحُ} [الأنفال 19]

✧ When the people met, [Abu Jahl said]: O Allah, whichever of us was more severing of ties of kinship and brought what we do not know, then grant victory to the dawn. That was his seeking of judgment, so Allah sent down {If you seek judgment, then judgment has come to you} [al-Anfal: 19].
