أَخْبَرَنَا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ يَحْيَى حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ حَدَّثَنَا الْمُقْرِئُ حَدَّثَنَا حَيْوَةُ بْنُ شُرَيْحٍ أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ

قُطِعَ عَلَى أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ بَعْثٌ إِلَى الْيَمَنِ فَاكْتُتِبْتُ فِيهِ فَلَقِيتَ عِكْرِمَةَ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَنَهَانِي عَنْ ذَلِكَ أَشَدَّ النَّهْيِ وَقَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ نَاسًا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ كَانُوا مَعَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ يُكَثِّرُونَ سَوَادَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَيَأْتِي أَحَدُهُمُ السَّهْمُ يُرْمَى بِهِ فَيُصِيبُهُ فَيَقْتُلُهُ أَوْ يُضْرَبُ فَيُقْتَلُ فَنَزَلَتِ {الَّذِينَ تَوَفَّاهُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ ظَالِمِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ قَالُوا فِيمَ كُنْتُمْ قَالُوا كُنَّا مُسْتَضْعَفِينَ} [النساء 97] الْآيَةُ

✧ An expedition was dispatched from the people of Madinah to Yemen, and I was enlisted in it. I met ʿIkrimah and told him, and he forbade me from that most severely and said: Ibn ʿAbbās informed me that some Muslims were with the polytheists, increasing the numbers of the polytheists. An arrow shot at them would strike one of them and kill him, or he would be struck and killed. So it was revealed: {Those whom the angels take while they are wronging themselves. They say, 'In what condition were you?' They say, 'We were oppressed in the land'} [al-Nisāʾ 97]—the verse.
