أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ بَزِيعٍ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ وَهُوَ ابْنُ زُرَيْعٍ حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ

كَانَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ أَسْلَمَ ثُمَّ ارْتَدَّ وَلَحِقَ بِالشِّرْكِ ثُمَّ نَدِمَ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى قَوْمِهِ سَلُوا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ هَلْ لِي مِنْ تَوْبَةٍ؟ فَجَاءَ قَوْمُهُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالُوا إِنَّ فُلَانًا قَدْ نَدِمَ وَإِنَّهُ قَدْ أَمَرَنَا أَنْ نَسْأَلَكَ هَلْ لَهُ مِنْ تَوْبَةٍ؟ فَنَزَلَتْ {كَيْفَ يَهْدِي اللهُ قَوْمًا كَفَرُوا بَعْدَ إِيمَانِهِمْ} [آل عمران 86] إِلَى {غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ} [البقرة 173] فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ فَأَسْلَمَ

Translation

✧ A man from the Anṣār embraced Islam, then apostatized and joined polytheism, then regretted it. He sent to his people: 'Ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ whether there is repentance for me.' His people came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'So-and-so has regretted it, and he has commanded us to ask you whether there is repentance for him.' Then was revealed {How shall Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their belief} [Āli ʿImrān 86] to {Forgiving, Merciful} [al-Baqarah 173]. So he sent to him, and he became Muslim.
