✧ Abu Ayyub, the companion of the Messenger of God ﷺ, said: O people, you interpret this verse according to such an interpretation, but this verse was only revealed concerning us, the Ansar. When God strengthened His religion and multiplied its supporters, we said among ourselves, some of us to others privately from the Messenger of God ﷺ: Our wealth has been lost; if only we would stay with it and repair what has been lost of it. Then God, blessed and exalted, revealed in His Book, refuting what we had intended: {And spend in the way of God and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction} [al-Baqarah: 195]. Thus destruction was the staying that we wanted to stay with our wealth to repair it. So we were commanded to go on expeditions, and Abu Ayyub remained fighting in the way of God until he passed away.
