أَخْبَرَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ حَدِيثِ أَبِي عَاصِمٍ عَنْ حَيْوَةَ بْنِ شُرَيْحٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَسْلَمُ أَبُو عِمْرَانَ قَالَ

قَالَ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ صَاحِبُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ إِنَّا لَمَّا أَعَزَّ اللهُ الْإِسْلَامَ وَكَثَّرَ نَاصِرِيهِ قَالَ بَعْضُنَا لِبَعْضٍ سِرًّا بَيْنَنَا إِنَّ اللهَ جَلَّ وَعَزَّ أَعَزَّ الْإِسْلَامَ وَكَثَّرَ نَاصِرِيهِ فَلَوْ أَقَمْنَا فِي أَمْوَالِنَا وَأَصْلَحْنَا مِنْهَا فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ جَلَّ وَعَزَّ وَرَدَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَيْنَا {وَأَنْفِقُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ وَلَا تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ وَأَحْسِنُوا إِنَّ اللهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ} [البقرة 195] فَكَانَتِ التَّهْلُكَةُ الْإِقَامَةَ فِي أَمْوَالِنَا

✧ Abu Ayyub, the companion of the Prophet ﷺ, said: When God strengthened Islam and multiplied its supporters, some of us said to one another privately among ourselves: God, mighty and majestic, has strengthened Islam and multiplied its supporters; if only we would stay with our wealth and repair what has been lost of it. So God, mighty and majestic, revealed, refuting us: {And spend in the way of God and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction, and do good; indeed, God loves the doers of good} [al-Baqarah: 195]. Thus destruction was staying with our wealth.
