أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُوسَى عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ رِبْعِيٍّ عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ
أَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ بَنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ خَيْرٌ لِقَوْمِكَ مِنْكَ كَانَ يُطْعِمُهُمْ بِالْكَبِدِ وَالسَّنَامِ وَأَنْتَ تَنْحَرُهُمْ قَالَ فَقَالَ مَا شَاءَ اللهُ فَلَمَّا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَنْصَرِفَ قَالَ مَا أَقُولُ؟ قَالَ قُلِ اللهُمَّ قِنِي شَرَّ نَفْسِي وَاعْزِمْ لِي عَلَى رُشْدِ أَمْرِي فَانْطَلَقَ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ أَسْلَمَ ثُمَّ إِنَّهُ أَسْلَمَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي كُنْتُ أَتَيْتُكَ فَقُلْتُ عَلِّمْنِي قُلْتَ قُلِ اللهُمَّ قِنِي شَرَّ نَفْسِي وَاعْزِمْ لِي عَلَى رُشْدٍ أَمْرِي فَمَا أَقُولُ الْآنَ حِينَ أَسْلَمْتُ؟ قَالَ قُلِ اللهُمَّ قِنِي شَرَّ نَفْسِي وَاعْزِمْ لِي عَلَى رُشْدٍ أَمْرِي اللهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي مَا أَسْرَرْتُ وَمَا أَعْلَنْتُ وَمَا أَخْطَأْتُ وَمَا عَمَدْتُ وَمَا عَلِمْتُ وَمَا جَهِلْتُ
Translation

✧ He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'O Muhammad, the Banu Abd al-Muttalib were better for your people than you. They used to feed them liver and hump, while you slaughter them.' He said: 'Whatever Allah wills.' When he wanted to leave, he said: 'What should I say?' He said: 'Say: O Allah, protect me from the evil of my own self and direct me to the right course in my affairs.' So he left without having embraced Islam. Then he embraced Islam and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I had come to you and said: Teach me, and you said: Say: O Allah, protect me from the evil of my own self and direct me to the right course in my affairs. So what should I say now that I have embraced Islam?' He said: 'Say: O Allah, protect me from the evil of my own self and direct me to the right course in my affairs. O Allah, forgive me what I have concealed and what I have revealed, what I have done by mistake and what I have done deliberately, what I know and what I do not know.'
