✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ put me in charge of guarding the zakat of Ramadan. Someone came and began scooping food, so I seized him and said, “I will take you to the Messenger of God ﷺ.” He said, “I am needy and have dependents, and I am in great need.” So I let him go. In the morning, the Prophet ﷺ said, “O Abu Hurayrah, what did your captive do last night?” I said, “O Messenger of God, he complained of great need and dependents, so I had mercy on him and let him go.” He said, “Indeed, he lied to you and will return.” I knew he would return because the Messenger of God ﷺ said he would return, so I lay in wait for him. He came scooping food, so I said, “I will take you to the Messenger of God ﷺ.” He said, “Leave me, for I am needy and have dependents, and I will not return.” I had mercy on him and let him go. In the morning, the Messenger of God ﷺ said, “O Abu Hurayrah, what did your captive do last night?” I said, “O Messenger of God, he complained of need and dependents, so I had mercy on him and let him go.” He said, “Indeed, he lied to you and will return.” So I lay in wait for him a third time. He came scooping food, and I seized him and said, “I will take you to the Messenger of God ﷺ. This is the last of three times that you claim you will not return, then you return.” He said, “Leave me and I will teach you words by which God will benefit you.” I said, “What are they?” He said, “When you go to your bed, recite Ayat al-Kursi: {God, there is no god but He, the Living, the Self-Subsisting} [al-Baqarah 255] until you complete the verse. Then there will remain over you a guardian from God, and no devil will come near you until morning.” So I let him go. In the morning, the Messenger of God ﷺ said to me, “What did your captive do last night?” I said, “O Messenger of God, he claimed that he would teach me words by which God would benefit me, so I let him go.” He said, “What are they?” I said, “He told me: When you go to your bed, recite Ayat al-Kursi from its beginning until you complete it: {God, there is no god but He, the Living, the Self-Subsisting} [al-Baqarah 255]. And he said: There will remain over you a guardian from God, and the devil will not come near you until morning.” They were the most eager of people for good. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Indeed, he is a liar but he told you the truth. Do you know whom you have been speaking with for three nights, O Abu Hurayrah?” I said, “No.” He said, “That was Satan.”
