أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ وَالْحَارِثُ بْنُ مِسْكِينٍ قِرَاءَةً عَلَيْهِ وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَاسِمِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مَالِكٌ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَبْدٍ الْقَارِئِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ يَقُولُ
سَمِعْتُ هِشَامَ بْنَ حَكِيمٍ يَقْرَأُ سُورَةَ الْفُرْقَانِ عَلَى غَيْرِ مَا أَقْرَؤُهَا عَلَيْهِ وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَقْرَأَنِيهَا فَكِدْتُ أَعْجَلُ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَمْهَلْتُهُ حَتَّى انْصَرَفَ ثُمَّ لَبَّبْتُهُ بِرِدَائِهِ فَجِئْتُ بِهِ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ هَذَا يَقْرَأُ سُورَةَ الْفُرْقَانِ عَلَى غَيْرِ مَا أَقْرَأْتَنِيهَا فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «اقْرَأْ» فَقَرَأَ الْقِرَاءَةَ الَّتِي سَمِعْتُهُ يَقْرَأُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «هَكَذَا أُنْزِلَتْ» ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي «اقْرَأْ» فَقَرَأْتُ فَقَالَ «هَكَذَا أُنْزِلَتْ إِنَّ هَذَا الْقُرْآنَ أُنْزِلِ عَلَى سَبْعَةِ أَحْرُفٍ فَاقْرَءُوا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنْهُ»

✧ I heard Hisham b. Hakim reciting Surat al-Furqan in a way different from how I recited it, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had taught it to me. I almost hurried to confront him, but then I gave him respite until he finished. Then I grabbed him by his cloak and brought him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I heard this man reciting Surat al-Furqan in a way different from what you taught me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Recite." He recited the same way I had heard him recite, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Thus it was revealed." Then he said to me, "Recite." So I recited, and he said, "Thus it was revealed. Indeed, this Quran was revealed in seven ahruf, so recite whatever is easy from it."
