أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شَبَابَةُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ شُعْبَةَ يَقُولُ أَتَيْتُ مُحَمَّدًا يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي لَيْلَى فَقُلْتُ أَقْرِئْنِي عَنْ سَلَمَةَ حَدِيثًا مُسْنَدًا

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَحَدَّثَ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى قَالَ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ «أَصْبَحْنَا عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ» فَذَكَرَ الدُّعَاءَ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ فَأَتَيْتُ سَلَمَةَ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ لَمْ أَسْمَعْ مِنِ ابْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي هَذَا شَيْئًا قُلْتُ وَلَا مِنْ قَوْلِ ابْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى؟ قَالَ لَا قُلْتُ وَلَا حُدِّثْتَ عَنْهُ؟ قَالَ لَا وَلَكِنِّي سَمِعْتُ ذَرًّا يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبْزَى عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ كَانَ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ قَالَ ذَلِكَ فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَفِي مَوْضِعٍ آخَرَ مِنْ كِتَابِي فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ فَقُلْتُ أَيْنَ ابْنُ أَبِي أَوْفَى مِنْ ذَرٍّ؟ وَفِي مَوْضِعٍ آخَرَ أَيْنَ ذَرٌّ مِنِ ابْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى؟ قَالَ هَكَذَا ظَنَنْتُ قُلْتُ هَكَذَا تُعَامِلُ بِالظَّنِّ؟ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى أَحَدُ الْعُلَمَاءِ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ سَيِّئُ الْحِفْظِ كَثِيرُ الْخَطَأِ

✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, then he narrated from Ibn Abi Awfa that he said: When he entered the morning, [he would say]: “We have entered the morning upon the natural disposition,” and he mentioned the supplication. Shu'bah said: I went to Salamah and mentioned that to him, and he said: I did not hear from Ibn Abi Awfa anything from the Prophet ﷺ about this. I said: Not even from the words of Ibn Abi Awfa? He said: No. I said: Not even were you told on his authority? He said: No, but I heard Dharr narrating from Sa'id b. 'Abd al-Rahman b. Abza, from his father, from the Prophet ﷺ that when he entered the morning he would say that. So I went back to Muhammad—and in another place in my book—I entered upon Muhammad and said: Where is Ibn Abi Awfa compared to Dharr? And in another place: Where is Dharr compared to Ibn Abi Awfa? He said: Thus I thought. I said: Thus you act on supposition? Abu 'Abd al-Rahman said: Muhammad b. 'Abd al-Rahman b. Abi Laila is one of the scholars, except that he has poor memory and makes many mistakes.
