أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مُطَرِّفًا عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَنْتَ سَيِّدُ قُرَيْشٍ فَقَالَ «السَّيِّدُ اللهُ» قَالَ أَنْتَ أَفْضَلُنَا قَوْلًا وَأَعْظَمُنَا فِيهَا طُولًا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لِيَقُلْ أَحَدُكُمْ بِقَوْلِهِ وَلَا يَسْتَجِرُّهُ الشَّيْطَانُ أَوِ الشَّيَاطِينُ»

✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'You are the master of Quraysh.' He said, 'The Master is Allah.' He said, 'You are the best of us in speech and the greatest of us in length (i.e., most eminent).' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Let one of you say what he says, but let not the Devil (or the devils) incite him.'
