✧ Marwan was governor over us for years, and he used to revile 'Ali ؓ every Friday on the pulpit. Then Marwan was dismissed and Sa'id b. al-'As was appointed for years, and he did not revile him. Then Sa'id was dismissed and Marwan was reinstated, and he reviled him. It was said to al-Hasan b. 'Ali ؓ: 'Do you not hear what Marwan says? Will you not reply with anything?' He used to come on Friday and enter the room of the Prophet ﷺ and remain in it. When the sermon was finished, he would go out to the mosque and pray in it, then return to his family. Marwan was not satisfied with that, until he sent someone to him in his house. While we were sitting with him, it was said to him: 'So-and-so is at the door.' He gave him permission, and he entered and said: 'I have come to you from the ruler, and I have come to you with a firm command.' He said: 'Speak.' He said: 'Marwan sent regarding 'Ali and regarding 'Ali and regarding you and regarding you, and I found no likeness for you except the likeness of a mule. It is said to it: Who is your father? It says: My mother is a horse.' He said: 'Return to him and tell him: By Allah, I will not erase anything of what you said by reviling you, but my appointed time and your appointed time is with Allah. If you are truthful, Allah will reward you for your truthfulness, and if you are lying, then Allah is severer in retribution. Allah (Exalted is He) has honored my grandfather too much for my likeness to be the likeness of a mule.' Then he went out and met al-Husayn ؓ in the room, who asked him. He said: 'I was sent with a message, and I have delivered it.' He said: 'By Allah, you will inform me of it, or I will order that you be beaten until it is not known when the beating will finish with you.' When al-Hasan ؓ saw him, he said: 'Release him.' He said: 'I cannot.' He said: 'Why?' He said: 'I have sworn an oath.' He said: 'Marwan sent regarding 'Ali and regarding 'Ali and regarding you and regarding you, and I found no likeness for you except the likeness of a mule. It is said to it: Who is your father? It says: My mother is a horse.' Al-Husayn ؓ said: 'May you eat the clitoris of your mother if you do not convey from me what I say to him. Tell him: Regarding you, and regarding your father, and regarding your people, and the sign between me and you is that you will grasp your shoulders from the curse of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.'
