وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى: حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُوسَى، ثَنَا الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ، حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ قَالَ:
سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا ؓ يَقُولُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ، وَأَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ، فَقَالَ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، مَا لِي أَرَاكَ تَسْتَحِيلُ النَّاسَ اسْتِحَالَةَ الرَّجُلِ إِبِلَهُ، أَبِعَهْدٍ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَوْ شَيْئًا رَأَيْتَهُ ؟ قَالَ ؓ: وَاللهِ مَا كَذَبْتُ، وَلَا كُذِّبْتُ، وَلَا ضَلَلْتُ، وَلَا ضُلَّ بِي، بَلْ عَهْدٌ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَقَدْ خَابَ مَنِ افْتَرَى
Translation

✧ I heard Ali ؓ say on the pulpit, when a man came to him and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, why do I see you turning people away as a man turns away his camels? Is it by a covenant from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or something you have seen?" He ؓ said: "By Allah, I have not lied, nor been lied to, nor gone astray, nor been led astray. Rather, it is a covenant from the Prophet ﷺ, and he who fabricates has failed."
