✧ He witnessed the killing of Uthman and said: I was then a boy of fourteen. He said: Safiyyah ordered us to saddle a mule with a howdah, so we saddled it, then walked around it to the gate. There was al-Ashtar with some people. Al-Ashtar said to her, "Go back to your house," but she refused. He raised a short spear or a lance and struck the mule's rump, so the mule steadied while the howdah tilted until it almost fell. When she saw that, she said, "Take me back, take me back!" He said: Four men of Quraysh had come out of the house, wounded and being carried; they had been defending Uthman. He mentioned al-Hasan b. Ali, Abdullah b. al-Zubayr, Ibn Khatib, and Marwan b. al-Hakam. I said: Did Muhammad b. Abi Bakr get stained with any of his blood? He said: God forbid! He entered upon him, and Uthman said to him, "I am not your man," and spoke to him some words, then he left without having touched any of his blood. I said: Then who killed him? He said: A man from Egypt called Jabalah. He kept saying, "I am the killer of Na'thal." I said: Where was Uthman then? He said: In the house.
