أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ كَثِيرِ بْنِ أَفْلَحَ مَوْلَى أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ:

كَانَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ سَلَامٍ ؓ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَأْتِيَ أَهْلُ مِصْرَ يَدْخُلُ عَلَى رُؤُوسِ قُرَيْشٍ، فَيَقُولُ لَهُمْ: لَا تَقْتُلُوا هَذَا الرَّجُلَ، يَعْنِي: عُثْمَانَ ؓ، فَيَقُولُونَ: وَاللهِ مَا نُرِيدُ قَتْلَهُ، فَيَخْرُجُ وَهُوَ مُتَّكِئٌ عَلَى يَدَيَّ، يَقُولُ: وَاللهِ لَيَقْتُلُنَّهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُمْ: لَا تَقْتُلُوهُ، فَوَاللهِ لَيَمُوتَنَّ إِلَى أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْمًا، فَأَبَوْا، فَخَرَجَ عَلَيْهِمْ بَعْدَ أَيَّامٍ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ: لَا تَقْتُلُوهُ، فَوَاللهِ لَيَمُوتَنَّ إِلَى خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ لَيْلَةً

✧ Abdullah b. Salam ؓ, before the people of Egypt came, used to enter upon the leaders of Quraysh and say to them, 'Do not kill this man,' meaning Uthman ؓ. They would say, 'By God, we do not intend to kill him.' Then he would leave, leaning on my arm, saying, 'By God, they will surely kill him.' Then he said to them, 'Do not kill him, for by God he will die within forty days.' But they refused. Then he went out to them after some days and said, 'Do not kill him, for by God he will die within fifteen nights.'
