✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent Abu Bakr al-Siddiq with his banner to one of the fortresses of Khaybar. He fought and returned without conquering it, and he had exerted himself. Then he sent Umar b. al-Khattab the next day, and he fought and returned without conquering it, and he had exerted himself. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'I will give the banner to a man who loves God and His Messenger, and God will grant victory at his hands.' Then he ﷺ called for Ali and spat into his eyes, then said: 'Take this banner and go with it until God grants you victory.' Salamah said: He went out with it, by God, trotting briskly, while we followed his tracks behind him, until he planted his banner in a pile of stones beneath the fortress. A Jew looked down at him from the top of the fortress and said: 'Who are you?' He said: 'Ali b. Abi Talib.' The Jew said to his companions: 'You are defeated, by what was revealed to Moses'—or as he said. He did not return until God granted victory at his hands.
